I call what I do "painting with pictures" since that's basically what it is. I've been thinking of trying a new approach to my mosaics because of this, which involves using a different sort of main image altogether. Here and there a more complex one gets used, but they are much fewer. Most of the photos that get used are the "boring" ones.those most uniform in colour. Yup I've noticed that drawback with my own mosaics. You can see them at They were apparently the inspiration for Robert Silvers. Have you seen the seashell mosaics produced by Ken Knowlton? Now they are really impressive, and definitely work on the basis of less is more.

Plus of course, it requires a large number of those types of tiles to select from, so that you have relatively "flat" tile images that reasonably match the colour they are trying to represent. Most often though, that requires tile images with very little details in them, as it's the only way to represent a continuous colour, such as in a sky or a painted wall background. I agree with you that there is something wonderfully impressive about a mosaic that produces a detailed overall image with as few tiles as possible. I hear Robert Silvers has got over 8,000,000 piccies on his HD. I'm still far from where I want to be with my own projects. Do my mosaics do this? To a limited extent, some of them do.

You're probably better off using one of a number of programmes available on the net for free that lets you use a local collection on your own computer, or alternately you could try Flickr's mosaic programme I get especially wow'ed by mosaics that can bring out details of an image while using very few tiles. It has only three mosaics and all three are pretty crappy. I dunno about zumyn.I looked at their gallery.
Thanks daisy, this program seems very interesting. I made a mosaic recently from photos stored on my computer using You can also use your photos from flickr if you want to as well. You could use Google's Picasa which is frree and has this function though the positioning is random and you don't get a key to each photo. That's what i opted for when I don't want to put the originals on flckr.
You may want to consider loading the pictures onto flickr first, create your mosaic and remove the originals from flickr. it seems this program is creating mosaics from our existingĪre there any ways we can create mosaics from the pictures I just found out there's program to create a mosaics on the net.
